Working with Steinburg & Devcon to design a building to be functional, beautiful and match the design architecture of current buildings.
The following is a transcript of the video "WL Hickey and Bestbath's relationship with Steinburg: A PCBC Conversation" :
Kenneth: Let's talk a little now about relationships. You guys have worked with Steinburg before, right?
Lee: That's correct.
Kenneth: Why don't you talk a little about that relationship and how you and Steinburg work together. I want to hear a little about the architect subcontractor relationships.
Edward: Well, what we do is we normally in this case we were not maybe you'd call it design assist. We didn't design the project, which we do a lot of, but we've worked with Steinburg as long as I've been with the company which is 38 years. They're very particular about what they want in the product and they're very strict but they're very fair. They also always look to put in very good product. I also know that the Mexican architect was really challenging for us and for everyone because...
Lee: It's different. It's just different.
Edward: Yeah we had a different concept of building and finishes I would say. We worked through that. That was the difficult part. I think at the end they really got a good beautiful product if you ask me.
Kenneth: Talk about your relationship with Steinburg.
Lee: Well we've done many projects with Steinburg and I'm going to second what Edward said. They are...again, I'm going to go back to this life cycle assessment. This is the point that they can make to the developers that their design and their product mix will provide the best value. Again, you've got to use that word value. We've done...right by the Stanford University, we did a classic Residence by Hyatt skilled nursing facility. We've done numerous senior living projects around the Bay area with Steinburg and they've always been value oriented. The word value is expressed in the finishes, the construction. They hire good contractors and their jobs are usually done very well on time within budget. It's just a really good relationship for Best Bath to have.
Edward: Yeah. I'm actually a resident of Palo Alto. This project was very close to my house. Also, the other project, the Hyatt Residence, is very close. I always drive by it to go take my daughter riding, and I always see that project. I'm always marveled, it's been 10 or 12 years now, how beautiful it is and how it fits so well into all the architecture throughout there.
Lee: Yeah, it just...the main building, the independent building, it just blends right into there.
Edward: You would think it had been there forever, and it's really relatively new.
Lee: Again, that was DevCon.
Edward: Exactly.
